Date: April 23. 2004

To: CTAP Regional Contacts

From: Bonnie Marks, Director

Subject: Bay Area Regional CTAP (BARC) Meeting

As the busy school year moves ahead, I want to remind you about the final BARC meeting for this academic year. The meeting will feature a presentation by Bard Williams, author of the newest ISTE book, We’re Getting Wired, We’re Going Mobile, What’s Next? We’ll also hear from Lucy Salerno of Travis Unified, who will spotlight an excellent free resource – Seeing Reason, a graphic organizer that maps causal relationships, available on the Intel website.

In addition, we’ll be honoring the teachers selected in CTAP’s 2004 Teacher Recognition Award Program. The teachers, each of whom will be receiving a $1,000 award from CTAP, will spend the morning at a workshop designed to enable them to meet one another and share ideas. You are most welcome to arrive at noon to meet and talk with the selected teachers. We will present their awards at the start of the BARC meeting. We look forward to seeing you on:

Minutes for the BARC Meeting on May 25, 2004

Welcome and Introductions – Bonnie Marks

TRAP Awards – Plaques were awarded to the 2003-2004 Teacher Recognition Award recipients. Photos and descriptions of each teacher’s class projects are posted on the CTAP IV website.

State Education Technology Updatehttp://www.cde.ca.gov/edtech/

CDE - The CDE has made extensive changes to their website. It is harder to find the EdTech section. From <www.cde.ca.gov>, click Learning Support on the top menu, then Educational Technology on the left menu.

CTAP² – CTAP² for students has been updated so that local administrators can now reset the student groups. This means that the old data is saved and groups of students can retake the survey. This allows the collection of pre- and post-program student data. It is being modified and will be shorter. However, district administrators can still require teachers to do long version if that is desired.

EETT requirements for CTAP² are changing. The EETT Competitive requirement is changing to require 100% of teachers participating in professional development under the grant to take the proficiency and technology use sections of the survey, rather than the current 60% of all teachers in the district. It is anticipated that EETT Formula requirements will also change.

CTAP will offer workshops on how to set up projects in CTAP², which will make collecting data on a subgroup of teachers easier.

eRate update – Wayne Shimizu has put his most recent eRate PowerPoint presentation on the Los Angeles COE website. This is a convenient way to find the newest changes in erate. It will soon be linked to the CTAP IV website.

Private Schools Principal's Academy – Private School Principals’ Academy - CTAP IV sponsored 4 this year. One more has recently been added. It will take place on June 28, 29 and 30. It is open only to principals of private schools. The focus is on how to be an educational instructional technology leader.

Solano is almost full. There are still several openings in Alameda County. Topics to be covered include the “4 I’s” – Inquiry, Internet, Inspiration and Information Literacy. There will be a focus on high priority schools and high priority students. Teachers should sign up in teams of 2-4 from a school.

Upcoming Workshops – Ken Graeber will lead a Special Education Learning Communities Workshop on June 2 in Marin County from 4:30-7:30. Topics will include forming a learning community, funding a learning community.

Technology Funding Alert! – The current issue includes: Elmer’s Glue grant gives schools glue, glue sticks and other supplies. Three Federal Grants are currently available – school library programs, school technology centers, 21st century high school program. Forensics in the classroom – check out their website, it has good resources in addition to the funding opportunity
ThinkQuest – check out their website, it has good resources in addition to the funding opportunity. NEA grant – website has info about previous winners
Details are available in the current issue of the Funding Alert, available as a paper copy from CTAP Region IV or online at <www.ctap4.org>. At the Safety and Security Workshop this morning, information was given about USDE Crisis Management Grants. These grants require community partners, such as a fire department. Additional information is available from <lindau@sbc.com>.

Middle School Math Project – The link on the CTAP IV website has preliminary resources aligned to the McDougal Little adoption for 8th grade algebra. This summer, CTAP will work with middle school math teachers to make it workable for teachers. Input is welcomed.

Microsoft Settlement Update – Only 4% of eligible Californians applied for the money, so >1billion will be available for California schools in Phase 2. Deadline for the first stage has been extended again, and could still be used as a school site fund raiser. Information is available at <www.microsoftcalsettlement.com>. Phase 2 schools must have 40% of their students eligible for free and reduced lunch. Eligibility will require a state approved tech plan. Districts will apply for their schools.

Enhancing Education through Technology - EEET Update

  • Formula Funded Grants – 60% of teaching staff must complete both parts of CTAP2 by June 30
Obligation of funds must be complete by August 29.
There will be three more rounds of EETT Formula funding next year.

Napa USD – focus is on literacy. A new school was added to their Year 1 program.

Resource Spotlight: Seeing Reason presented by Lucy Salerno, Travis Unified – Seeing Reason is a new website by Intel. It helps children see the reason behind cause-and-effect events. A 4th grade teacher used it to address the California science standard on causes of events studied in earth science, like earthquakes. Seeing Reason is similar to Inspiration, but it is easier to show causal relationships. It gives students a tool to hypothesize, research and draw preliminary conclusions. This free resource is available at <www.intel.com/education/seeingreason >.

Implementation Report Feedback — 60% of districts responded
There is overall satisfaction with CTAP’s progress in the 4 pillars
Videoconferencing has especially been appreciated

Featured Speaker: Bard Williams — Bard Williams presented information from his book We’re Getting Wired, We’re Going Mobile, What’s Next? Contact Bard at <bard@techthree.com>. Slides from his presentation will be on the CTAP IV website.
