Maya Notes Sample
This sample collection of notes is used to illustrate how writers can move from disorganized notes into an expository essay.

Writing Organizer
Use this organizer to help students organize their thoughts as they prepare to write a 5 paragraph essay.

Writing Steps
This generalized list of steps is based on Structured Writing by Kathleen McMurdo and adapted from Computer Based Study Strategies. Through these strategies, students will use templates and these process steps as support so that they can understand the structure of the writing they are being asked to do, and so that they can accomplish it successfully.

Expanded Paragraph Template
Using an Inspiration template, students can use a graphic organizer to plan and structure their writing to be successful.

Transitions
This list of general transtion words helps students choose words to increase their fluency within a paragraph. The list suggests words to help build topic sentences and connect ideas within a paragraph.

Transitions Relationships
This site is hosted by the The Writing Center out of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. "In this crazy, mixed-up, topsy-turvy world of ours, transitions glue our ideas and our essays together. This handout enlists you in the cause." This resource focuses on the relationships transitions convey in writing.

Transitions--essay style specific
This second list of transition words are style specific. Different choices can be made depending on whether the essay is a reason essay, an example essay, or a compare and contrast essay.

Essay Scaffold in MS Word
This scaffold uses the same principles in Structured Writing but only uses Microsoft Word. Utilizing the outline feature, students use color-coding to organize their writing and progress towards a finished essay.

Paragraph Frame
This highly scaffolded structure helps struggling writers create a basic paragraph based on their notes. This document uses the form feature fo Microsoft Word. To learn how to work with forms, look in the Critical Note Taking section of the New Literacy website.
