CTAP Algebra 1 Sample Unpackings

Absolute Value - using the online tool Mathulator
Standard: Algebra 3.0

The Mathulator is an online tool that can help students understand the concept by explaining sample problems and by evaluating whether statements are true or false.  The graphing component is simple to use and can plot single functions or overlay them on previous functions.

Discounts - using a MATH TV problem solving video
Standard: Algebra 5.0
Calculating Discounts poses a multi-step problem involving calculating discount on store items purchased as well as determining the remaining funds on a gift card.

Multi-Step Equations - using Algebra Balance, one of Interactive Mathematics manipulatives
Standards: Algebra 5.0 and 6.0

Interactive Mathematics - Algebra Balance, a virtual manipulative allows you to solve simple linear equations through the use of a balance beam.

Distance - using a MATH TV problem solving video
Standard: Algebra 5.0

Students will be given strategies for solving a sample problem using rate and distance. Additional problems to solving problems using similar strategies.

Slope - using GraphIt, a tool for plotting points, graphing and exploring functions
Standard: Algebra 7.0
Graphit is a tool for plotting points, graphing and exploring functions.

Pythagorean Theorem - using Squaring the Triangle and Pythagorean Explorer
Standard: Algebra 24.2

By manipulating the sides of a right triangle, students can repeatedly prove the Pythagorean Theorem by comparing the length of the sides and by viewing the area of the three squares formed by using the sides of the right triangle.
